Is Professionalism Killing Sport?

September 28, 2010

When Dumbarton last won Scottish football’s top division title, in 1890/91 and 1891/92, we were an amateur team.

Turning professional created the first traumas in our long history. Now we’re professional but part-time – and the debate about ‘professionalism’ in sport (however you define that) rumbles on. Footie fans always like a rumble!

BBC1 Scotland ran an interesting documentary on the issue the other night – 7.30pm on 27 September 2010.

Presenter Ed Miller talked to football, golf and cricket pros, and asked: “Has the fun gone out of sport and do the top sport stars actually enjoy what they do? Would their performance improve considerably if they simply relaxed and put the enjoyment back into game? Is professionalism actually making our sportsmen and women worse at their sport?”

What do you reckon? If you missed the programme you can catch it again on 2 October, or on the BBC iPlayer.
