DUMBARTON’S players have made a financial contribution to the Sons Supporters Trust’s travel scheme to compensate for the recent 6-0 defeat at Queen of the South.

The squad have dug into their own pockets to give something back to the fans after the forgettable afternoon at Palmerston Park last month.

Skipper Darren Barr presented a sum of money to Trust Travel convener Tommy Hughes and Trust member Denise Currie before Saturday’s game with Raith Rovers.

And although it was unfortunate circumstances that led to the donation, it was appreciated by the fans.

Darren said: “What happened at Palmerston was extremely disappointing and the players felt it was only right that the fans should receive some sort of compensation.

“They have been great all season and hopefully our donation can help them to keep coming to away games for the foreseeable future.

“We’re all in this together as we bid to stay in the Championship.”

Tommy, who has run Trust Travel buses for the last nine seasons, said: “This gesture by the players is very much appreciated.

“While we were all disappointed by events in Dumfries, we will keep backing the players at home and away, especially during this vital stage of the season.

“The money donated will be used to help fund our bus to Alloa on 1st May.

“Hopefully this will get the fans behind the players that bit more. It certainly shows the players care what goes on at Dumbarton.”

Players and fans are gearing up for Survival Saturday, when Sons play St Mirren aiming for a victory and hopeful that the now managerless Queen of the South can stop Livingston winning.

If both of those happen, Dumbarton stay in the Championship for a fifth consecutive season – a remarkable achievement for a part-time club.

Keep an eye on the club website for all the build-up to Survival Saturday.
