DUMBARTON resident Faye Suso, whose family are from West Africa, and Tim Rhead, from St Augustine’s Church, were on hand at Dumbarton Football Stadium last weekend, to receive two new sets of kit for “the Sons of Gambia”.

The gift has been made by the Sons Supporters Trustsin support of a youth team and community project in Gambia, which is one of the poorest countries in Africa. About a third of the population lives below the international poverty line of £1-a-day.

Sonstrust communications and projects officer Simon Barrow, who organized the presentation, explained: “Back in 2009, the club donated some strips to our friends in Gambia, and they have been proud to bear the name of Dumbarton FC ever since.

“When some new strips became available from our supporters’ team we thought it was definitely time to renew the link.

“We are delighted to be supporting youth football in West Africa, and also community projects which will benefit the lives of local people.”

Sonstrust membership secretary Tommy Hughes’ daughter Vicki, is living and working in the Gambian capital of Banjul at the moment, and plans to go and see the “Sons of Gambia” play.

“We’d like to develop a continuing relationship with the lads,” added Simon barrow. “Football is about community as well as sport, and that’s something both the club and the Sonstrust are very committed to.”

Dumbarton FC director Alan Findlay was also on hand for the presentation on behalf of the club.
