News Update

February 9, 2014

The following news text was sent by e-mail to Trust members on our mailing list earlier today.

Dear Trust Members

We are sure you will agree that it has been a good start to 2014 for Sons fans! The team is putting in a fine, fighting performance as a part-time side in the new SPFL championship and we have achieved some significant signings in the transfer window.

In fact, Dumbarton FC has just achieved its best league position for nearly 20 years when we moved into fourth place a few weeks ago. It is going to require a massive effort from everybody to maintain ourselves where we are, but it can be done!

And with the team now in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, has there been a better time to be a Sons fan?

Off the field, it has been a busy start to the new year too. As well as its usual activities (organising buses, the website, the programme and much more) the Sonstrust and its board has been keeping an eye on behind the scenes issues affecting the development of the club. We will of course keep you informed and involved too.

We have had continuing success with our efforts at getting Dumbarton fans to matches via our travel section, but we have to again make the point about us (you) being ambassadors for the society as well as the club.

No alcohol to be consumed on any of the buses the Sonstrust provides for any game. Members are reminded that it is a criminal offence to consume alcohol on any coaches en route to or from football matches. The police have “stop and search” powers over football supporters’ coaches, and if any offence has been committed they will not allow the coach to proceed to the match. Please do not take the chance of spoiling our trip.

Our AGM is being planned for March, and you will receive full details and notification shortly. This will be an opportunity to review the past year, to plan for the future, and to elect the trust board once again.

In other developments, the Sonstrust and the club are jointly organising a meet the manager session with gaffer Ian Murray on Saturday 15 February.

This will be an opportunity for supporters to come along and discuss the season so far.

The session starts at 11.30am and will take place in the community suite at the Bet Butler Stadium.

The Sonstrust is also continuing to work closely and cooperatively with Supporters Direct Scotland, which is moving forward the agenda of supporter and community engagement and ownership across the Scottish game.

One important piece of news is that an amendment has been put to the Scottish government’s upcoming Bill on community empowerment and renewal, aiming to widen its scope beyond land and physical assets to include football clubs’ membership shares and an extension of the ‘right to buy’ principal. We are working with SD on this.

Last but not least, we are developing a new email system to keep you in touch, and we are wanting to enable as many trust members as possible to be able to receive this in order to make communication more regular.

Please make sure that we have your up-to-date contact details. If there have been any changes to your circumstances, please let our membership secretary know – e-mail Tommy usining

Most importantly – enjoy the football over the next few weeks, and let’s keep cheering on the Sons to victory!
