Scepticism About Friday Nights

October 15, 2011

A SIGNIFICANT number of Dumbarton fans are sceptical about the idea of regular Friday night football replacing the traditional Saturday experience, according to a poll run by the Sonstrust.

After five weeks worth of voting, 71% of respondents answered ‘no’ to the question Do you want to see the introduction of Friday-night football on a regular basis? 18% said ‘yes’ and 12% were ‘undecided’.

Opposition seems to be based on a strong tradition, on perceived travelling difficulties for away games, and on football not fitting with other Friday night activities. But those who favour change say that it is good to experiment, that the game needs a shake up, and that those with weekend work or family commitments would be attracted.

The two games tried so far by the Scottish Premier League (SPL) and Scottish Football League (SFL), including one at nearby Morton, have both had good attendances. But commentators say that this may be due to novelty value rather than longer term sustainability.

I think that the occassional Friday night game during some of the winter months would be an excellent idea
