Sons Fans On Fine Form!

April 30, 2011

FERRIED once again by the Sonstrust travel-team bus, Dumbarton supporters were in fine form at the Livingston game this afternoon, cheering Sons on to a well-deserved 1-1 draw against the Division Two champions.

The result has added significance: enabling us to avoid the relegation play-offs, secure DFC’s position in the division next term, and make the chances of seventh place highly likely … depending on the outcome of the match against Forfar Athletic on 7th May. That occasion will now be a huge celebration of Sons’ remarkable ‘Escape to Victory’ after a dire start in 2010-11.

Meanwhile, Alan Adamson’s Rainbow Army (as I have just dubbed them) got the party show on the road in no uncertain terms today. While theoretically it was Livingston‘s occasion to rejoice – given their deserved title success – it was Sons fans, colourfully ‘dressed to impress’, who kept up a constant stream of singing, chanting, cheering and laughing.

It all helped inspire the players into a brave performance on the pitch. Indeed Dumbarton were minutes away from what would have been a famous at Almondvale, halted only by an 80th minute equalizer to Pat Walker‘s first-half strike to put Sons ahead.

As well as giving individual players a boost, the ‘Sonsteam Massive’ explore the gamut of the DFC unofficial songbook, and directed some well-observed, er, “encouraging remarks” to the opposition fans – who were good hosts but seemed a little subdued.

“Your supporters were raucous, good-natured, funny, and generally great,” said one of the stewards, whose keepy-up with a balloon was widely appreciated. “To be honest, it sometimes seemed like you had just won the League!”

Supporters from both teams stayed on for the on-pitch awards ceremony afterwards, to round of a sunny, sporting day.

A short video of the Sons singing has been uploaded for your viewing pleasure at the Onlyjustoffside blog. So go and treat yourself to 17 seconds of unalloyed musical magic and mayhem. Then come and do better at SHS next week, making sure that you get your indispensible awards night tickets into the bargain!
